Established in 1982 as the first computer store in Northern Michigan, The Computer Haus specialized in sales, service and support of the following manufactures: Apple, Acer, Epson, Compaq, Hewlett Packard, IBM and Packard Bell. In June of 1987, The Computer Haus was purchased by Full Service Medical Systems, a medical billing company for major hospitals in Detroit, Michigan, owned and operated by Richard Neu, CEO and James Neu, President.
By July of 1988, The Computer Haus recognized the ease of use and stable operating system of the Apple Macintosh computer and chose to sell, service and support specifically, Apple products and accessories. By this time there were at least four competitors in Northern Michigan, but The Computer Haus remained the only Apple Authorized Education, Sales and Service reseller in the region, including the upper peninsula.
In 1993 The Computer Haus moved to a new location and remained there for 15 years. The business continually overcame industry obstacles, maintained the highest level of sales and service-as an Apple Specialist, and increased sales by an average of 30% every year.
In 2008, after 27 years, The Computer Haus changed its name and is now doing business as City Mac. City Mac moved to a prominent location in Traverse City at the most heavily trafficked intersection in Northern Michigan. The doors to a new 6100 square foot store opened in November 2008. The new City Mac location includes more than 3700 square feet of showroom dedicated to Apple hardware, software and third party products. There is also a 1500 square foot service department including “The Bench” which is similar to the “Genius Bar”, offering on-the-spot troubleshooting and repair.
With the new location, CityMac also introduced a new segment to their reseller concept; a 900 square foot full service coffee shop called The Digital Café was established. The Digital Cafe is Traverse City’s new destination for free WiFi, and serving fresh, locally roasted Higher Grounds Organic Fair Trade coffee.
Continuing along the newly refined lines of the CityMac business model, a new store was planned for Asheville, North Carolina. After relocating his family to Asheville, Jim Neu set out to find the perfect location.
After a 18 months of searching, on November 27th, 2009 CityMac opened it’s newest location on Biltmore Avenue near Biltmore Village, the Biltmore Estate, and Mission St. Joseph’s Hospital, in beautiful Asheville, North Carolina.
The newest CityMac location brings even more to the Apple Specialist concept, by integrating a comprehensive training center, expanded software lines, more Apple computer accessories, and our newest coffee shop concept, CityMug.
